Miyagi and Yamagata, Japan -Jan. 30: Japan's weather agency raised Tuesday the alert level for Mt. Zao, a volcano near a popular ski area in northeastern Japan, citing the detection of volcanic tremors and warning of the possibility of a small eruption. The alert on a scale of five has been raised from 1, which only indicates the "potential" for increased activity, to 2, a level advising People to refrain from approaching the crater, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The agency warned that an area within an approximately 1.2-kilometer radius of the crater could see rocks raining down from above if a small eruption occurs. Mt. Zao straddles the border between prefectures of Miyagi and Yamagata.
